Volunteers providing respite services and helping families stay at home

AmericorpUniversity Maryland

Legacy Corps is a partnership between Salt Lake County Aging Services, the Corporation for National and Community Services and the University of Maryland Center on Aging. The Program is designed to provide respite care which assist caregivers in caring for their family members. Salt Lake County is one of only 12 sites in the Nation chosen to participate in this unique service provided by the National AmeriCorps Program. The Legacy Corps Program represents the first utilization of the National AmeriCorps Program in an aging initiative.

The Legacy Corps members are 18 years of age or older and committed to assisting families maintaining their loved ones at home rather than placing them in a long-term care facility. Individuals 50 years of age or older are a priority for enrolment. The members serve an average of 10 -12 hours per week; the total service commitment is 450 hours during one year commit. Members are provided a living allowance of $2,200 a year, which is issued on a regular basis twice a month. In addition if the member completes the full 450 hours commitment in a twelve month period, an educational award of $1,250 that can be used at any institution of higher education in the nation for up 7 years will be provided. Regular training sessions are held to assist members in learning about the various dynamics of aging and caregiving and what other services are available that can be accessed to further the independence of both the caregiver and care receiver. Legacy Corps members are carefully screened, interviewed and evaluated. Members must commit to a full year of services in the program.

This unique demonstration is designed to use the talent time and experience of mature adults and young adults to provide services and solve one of the growing needs for service in Salt lake County and throughout the country.
