Assist home bound elderly and provide respite to families

The Senior Companion Program provides an opportunity for low-income seniors to earn a small tax-free stipend of $2.65 per hour while helping other seniors maintain their independence. Senior Companions serve twenty hours each week providing help and advocacy to individuals living alone and respite to caregivers. As a Senior Companion you will help link seniors with other service providers in order to meet their needs and problems. You will also help reduce the isolation of your customers by helping with light housecleaning, meal preparation, socialization, rides to doctor appointments, and limited personal care. This assistance helps delay the need for nursing home placement at a higher cost to the individual and the taxpayer.
To participate you must be age 60 or older and have an income that is less than $1,100 for a single person and $1,485 for a couple.). As a program participant, by Federal law you are considered a volunteer; the reimbursement ($2.65/hour) you receive is not considered income, is non-taxable, and does not reduce other entitlement program benefits such as subsidized housing, Medicaid, food stamps, Social Security, or SSI.
To be eligible for help from a Senior Companion, you must be 60 years of age or older and in need of assistance in maintaining your independence or in need of respite for your caregiver.
