Description:

Bridges brings older adults from the community into the classroom to help children who are performing below their grade level. While tutoring a child one-on-one, a volunteer increases the child's basic academic skills in reading, English and math, helps the child develop a better attitude toward school, and positively influences the child's self-esteem.

Volunteer Opportunities: Elementary School Tutor Volunteers work under the direction of class room teachers to help children improve their reading, spelling, math, or writing skills by tutoring them one-on-one four hours a week. Volunteers may choose the school, grade level, and the days and times they want to work.

Volunteer Requirements

  • At least 45 years old
  • Mandatory background check
  • Mandatory orientation
  • Commitment to spend 2 - 4 hours a week in a class room

Training and Support: Bridges staff gives an initial 2.5 hour mandatory orientation which is followed by optional training provided throughout the school year on a variety of educational topics. Additional support and materials are also provided by teachers.
