Description:

The Foster Grandparent Program provides the opportunity for low-income seniors 60 years of age and older to serve 20 hours per week assisting children with special needs. These volunteers serve in a variety of settings throughout Salt Lake County including schools, shelters, daycare centers, and crisis centers for parents and children.

Benefits: Volunteers participating in this Program receive the following benefits:

  • $2.65 per hour stipend (not considered income, does not effect eligibility for other entitlements such as subsidized housing, food stamps, Medicaid etc).
  • Transportation reimbursement - mileage for use of their own vehicle or a monthly bus pass at no cost to the volunteers.
  • Free annual physical exam.
  • Excess accident and auto insurance while providing volunteer service.
  • Recognition for their volunteer service.

Training and Support: Orientation training is provided to all volunteers during their first six months of service. Volunteers also receive monthly in-service training on topics relating to their volunteer activity.

Eligibility: Willingness and ability to serve 20 hours per week, 60 years of age or older, and a monthly income of less than $1,102 per month for a single person household, $1,485 for a two-person household.
